How much does a dentist appointment cost? Consultations, check-ups, fillings, X-rays and what affects the price

A dentist appointment has no single price: you pay for what the dentist does, with examinations, X-rays, fillings and extractions listed separately. Find out what common items cost at the clinic in Białystok, what a procedure’s price usually excludes, why prices are rising and what the NFZ provides free of charge.

What determines the cost of a dentist appointment?

The cost of a dentist appointment depends above all on what happens during it: an examination alone costs a different amount from an examination with an X-ray, or an appointment involving a filling or an extraction. Asking what an appointment costs therefore makes sense once its purpose is clear.

The price of an individual procedure covers the dentist’s and assistant’s time, materials, instrument preparation and sterilisation and, for crowns, bridges and dentures, the dental laboratory’s work. The complexity of the case also matters, such as the number of root canals, the number of surfaces in a filling or the position of a tooth to be removed.

  • The scope of the appointment: a consultation, check-up, treatment or visit for pain.
  • Diagnostic imaging: an intraoral X-ray, panoramic X-ray or CT scan, if needed.
  • Anaesthesia, which may appear as a separate price list item.
  • The extent of treatment: the number of surfaces, canals or roots.
  • Laboratory work for crowns, bridges, aligners and dentures.

How much do a dental consultation and check-up cost?

A dental consultation costs 300 zł in DentalBlue’s price list, while “Badanie stomatologiczne” (dental examination) costs 200 zł. Consultations with dentists working in particular fields, including “Konsultacja periodontologiczna” (periodontal consultation), “Konsultacja protetyczna” (prosthodontic consultation), “Konsultacja ortodontyczna” (orthodontic consultation) and “Konsultacja implantologiczna” (implant consultation), each cost 300 zł in this list.

A first appointment can also take the form of one of two listed services. “Wizyta bez bólu” (visit without pain, 300 zł) includes a panoramic X-ray, consultation, examination and written treatment plan. “Wizyta z bólem” (visit in pain, 340 zł) includes a panoramic X-ray, consultation, examination and pain relief. The dentist determines the final scope and cost, and prices may change.

How often to attend and what a check-up covers are explained in the separate article on dental check-ups. Professional cleaning, which often accompanies a check-up, is a separate procedure with its own price.

What do fillings, X-rays and other common procedures cost? A price table

Common dental procedures have separate entries in the price list, and their total makes up the appointment cost. The table shows selected items from DentalBlue’s price list in Białystok, retaining their listed names. Prices may change, and the dentist determines the scope of each treatment after an examination.

The cost of root canal treatment varies with the number of canals and whether treatment takes one visit or several. The article on root canal treatment costs explains this in detail.

What does the price of a procedure usually exclude?

The price of a procedure usually covers the procedure itself, while things needed before and after it may be listed separately. The overall cost of treating one tooth is therefore often higher than the single price you first see.

DentalBlue’s price list has separate items including “Znieczulenie” (60 zł), “Pakiet zdjęć RVG do leczenia endodontycznego: przed, w trakcie i po leczeniu oraz kontrolne” (digital X-ray package for root canal treatment: before, during, after treatment and at follow-up, 200 zł) and “Kontrola po higienizacji” (review after professional cleaning, 50 zł). Your treatment plan shows which items apply. The clinic’s price list notes that the number of canals, surfaces and units changes the final cost.

  • Local anaesthesia or sedation.
  • X-rays before and during treatment and at follow-up.
  • A dressing or temporary filling between appointments.
  • Restoration after root canal treatment, often a crown or onlay for back teeth.
  • Follow-up appointments and any adjustments.

Why is dental treatment expensive?

Dental treatment is costly because a procedure usually involves a dentist working with a chairside assistant, single-use materials, instrument sterilisation and diagnostic imaging. Prosthodontic treatment also includes a dental technician’s work, and implant treatment includes the cost of the implant itself.

Dental service prices in Poland have been rising substantially for several years. According to Eurostat’s Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), the annual average increase in dental service prices in Poland was 14.9% in 2022, 14.2% in 2023, 8.9% in 2024 and 9.2% in 2025.

Some patients also pay privately because the NFZ benefit package is limited: for example, it does not include implants or crowns. Dentists’ medical care services intended to prevent disease and preserve, save, restore or improve health are exempt from VAT (art. 43 ust. 1 pkt 19 of the Act on tax on goods and services).

How can you check costs before treatment, and will the dentist issue an invoice?

The simplest way to check costs before treatment begins is to ask for a plan showing the price of each stage. The Act on price information for goods and services requires prices to be displayed clearly and unambiguously where services are provided (art. 4 ust. 1). The Patient Rights Act gives you the right to understandable information about proposed and possible treatment methods (art. 9 ust. 2).

You give consent after receiving this information (art. 16 of the Patient Rights Act), so you have time to compare options, such as a filling and an onlay. A dentist whose services are VAT-exempt does not have to issue an invoice automatically, but must do so if a patient requests one within 3 months of the end of the month in which the service was provided or payment made (art. 106b ust. 2 i 3 of the VAT Act, legal status as of 24 October 2026).

  • Ask which price list items the plan includes and what might change during treatment.
  • Check whether the price includes anaesthesia, X-rays and follow-up visits.
  • Request costs for the alternatives if the dentist suggests more than one method.
  • Keep your treatment plan and proof of payment, and request an invoice within 3 months.

What dental care is free under the NFZ?

At a practice with an NFZ contract, eligible patients do not pay for listed services: a dental examination with oral hygiene instruction once a year, 3 check-ups a year, fillings, extractions, tartar removal once a year and anaesthesia. Adults are entitled to root canal treatment of incisors and canines only, while children under 18 and women during pregnancy and the postnatal period are covered for all teeth (legal status as of 24 October 2026).

The list does not cover implants, crowns, bridges or light-cured fillings for most adults, so these treatments are paid for privately. According to the Podlaskie NFZ branch, 206 treatment sites in the region provide NFZ general dentistry (as of 24 October 2026). The article on NFZ dentists explains how to find a practice in Białystok.

How DentalBlue prepares a treatment estimate

At DentalBlue in Białystok, an estimate starts with an examination. “Wizyta bez bólu” (300 zł) includes a panoramic X-ray taken in the clinic’s own radiology unit, a consultation, examination and written treatment plan. This explains what will happen, in what order and what each stage costs before anything is agreed. Patients in pain can attend a “Wizyta z bólem” (340 zł), which includes pain relief. The final scope and cost are determined at the appointment, and prices may change. The clinic opens Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 20:00 and Saturdays from 8:00 to 16:00.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a dentist appointment for toothache cost?

Privately, it depends on what the dentist needs to do. DentalBlue’s price list lists “Wizyta z bólem” at 340 zł, including a panoramic X-ray, consultation, examination and pain relief. Prices may change. Under the NFZ, a contracted practice provides help for pain free of charge on the day you attend.

Do you have to pay for a dental consultation on its own?

Privately, yes: a consultation is a separate service, priced at 300 zł in DentalBlue’s price list. Under the NFZ, a dental examination with oral hygiene instruction is available free once a year, and a check-up 3 times a year, at a practice with a Fund contract.

Does a dentist have to issue an invoice for treatment?

Yes, at the patient’s request. Dentists’ medical services are VAT-exempt, so invoices are not issued automatically. However, the VAT Act requires one to be issued if you ask within 3 months of the end of the month in which the service was provided or payment made (art. 106b ust. 3).

Does a filling’s price include anaesthesia?

That depends on the practice. DentalBlue’s price list lists anaesthesia separately at 60 zł, and a single-surface filling costs 300 zł. Your treatment plan explains which items your treatment includes. Under the NFZ, anaesthesia is free alongside the procedure.

Should a dental practice display a price list?

Yes. The Act on price information for goods and services requires prices to be displayed clearly and unambiguously where services are provided (art. 4 ust. 1). However, the final treatment cost depends on the scope determined by the dentist after an examination.
