You do not need a referral to see an NFZ dentist in Białystok, but the practice must have a contract with the Fund. Find out how to use the NFZ search tool, how many treatment sites the region has, how long waits are for orthodontics, oral surgery and periodontics, and what to do about toothache.

How do you find an NFZ dentist in Białystok?

The simplest way to find an NFZ dentist in Białystok is through “Gdzie się leczyć” (where to get treatment), the search tool run by NFZ, Poland’s National Health Fund. Select “Przychodnie i szpitale” (clinics and hospitals), then “Leczenie stomatologiczne” (dental treatment). The Podlaskie regional NFZ branch recommends selecting a district or town alongside the specialty. The system then shows contracted facilities, with addresses, telephone numbers and opening hours.

Another tool is the treatment waiting-time directory, which shows average waits at individual practices. The address terminyleczenia.nfz.gov.pl now leads to the “Terminy leczenia” (treatment dates) tab in the same search tool. According to pacjent.gov.pl, around 14 thousand facilities with NFZ contracts update the information.

If you would rather speak to someone, call the free Patient Information Helpline on 800 190 590, available around the clock. You can check your insurance status in Internetowe Konto Pacjenta (the online patient account) or the mojeIKP app.

  • Open gsl.nfz.gov.pl, select “Przychodnie i szpitale”, then “Leczenie stomatologiczne”.
  • Select the Podlaskie region, a district or the town of Białystok and, if needed, a specialty such as orthodontics.
  • Compare several facilities under “Terminy leczenia”, as waiting times at neighbouring practices can vary considerably.
  • Call your chosen practice to book an appointment and ask which documents to bring.

How many NFZ dental treatment sites are there in Podlaskie?

General dentistry funded by the NFZ is available at 206 treatment sites in the Podlaskie region, and orthodontics for children and young people at 18 sites. These figures come from the Podlaskie regional NFZ branch’s list of contracts effective from 1 July 2025, checked on 24 October 2026.

A treatment site is an individual surgery, so one provider may have several in different parts of the city. The figures cover the whole region; to see practices within Białystok itself, select the town in the search tool.

  • General dentistry: 206 sites, plus 40 sites for children and young people and 13 school dental surgeries.
  • Orthodontics for children and young people: 18 sites, plus 1 site providing orthodontic care for children with congenital craniofacial abnormalities.
  • Oral surgery and periodontics: 16 sites; periodontics alone: 4 sites.
  • Prosthodontics: 25 sites, plus 1 site for patients following surgery for craniofacial cancers.
  • Treatment under general anaesthesia: 5 sites; emergency dental care: 1 site; mobile dental unit: 1.

Do you need a referral for an NFZ dentist?

You do not need a referral for an NFZ dentist: art. 57 ust. 2 pkt 2 of the Act on publicly funded healthcare services exempts dental services from the referral requirement (legal status as of 24 October 2026). The provision does not distinguish between dental specialties, and pacjent.gov.pl explicitly states that an orthodontist does not require a referral.

Some X-rays do require a referral. During a child’s orthodontic treatment, 2 panoramic X-rays are covered over the entire course, only with an orthodontist’s referral. For oral surgery services, the Podlaskie NFZ branch explains that a panoramic X-ray is covered once every 3 years.

You may choose any dentist with an NFZ contract (art. 31 ust. 1 of the Act), including one in another neighbourhood or town. Confirm the booking arrangements for an oral surgery and periodontics clinic when contacting your chosen facility.

How long is the wait for an NFZ dentist in Białystok?

Confirm the availability of a planned NFZ dental appointment in Białystok with the practice’s reception, because a historical average waiting time is not the first available date. According to the NFZ directory, at 30 of the 55 dental clinics in Białystok the average wait reported for September 2026 was 0 days, at 44 it was no more than 30 days, and the longest average was 237 days. An average of 0 days does not mean the practice has a free slot today; it can also mean that nobody on the waiting list received treatment.

Specialist services have longer waits, particularly orthodontic appliance treatment and periodontics. The table brings together data for Białystok downloaded from the treatment waiting-time directory on 24 October 2026.

Average waiting times are reported by the practices themselves, and patients continuing treatment are not added to waiting lists. Figures change monthly, so check the latest data and compare several facilities before booking.

NFZ orthodontics, oral surgery and periodontics: what is covered?

NFZ orthodontists provide removable appliance treatment for children until their 12th birthday, with follow-up of the results until their 13th birthday. The Podlaskie NFZ branch adds that appliance repairs are free once per calendar year until the age of 13, provided the appliance was made under the NFZ. The regulation excludes fixed appliances from this cover.

An NFZ oral surgeon removes teeth, including surgical extractions, and incises abscesses. A periodontist treats periodontal disease, namely periodontitis, for example with closed curettage and irrigation of gum pockets. In contracts held by the Podlaskie NFZ branch, the two fields appear together as oral surgery and periodontics.

For adults, the NFZ covers root canal treatment of incisors and canines only; for children under 18 and women during pregnancy and the postnatal period, it covers all teeth. The NFZ does not fund implants, crowns or bridges. The article on NFZ dental cover gives the full list of services by patient group.

What should you do about toothache under the NFZ in Białystok?

A practice with an NFZ contract should help with toothache on the day you attend: § 6 of the regulation on guaranteed dental services states that a patient presenting with pain must receive care that day. With acute pain, you therefore do not have to wait for an available appointment shown in the directory.

Outside normal practice hours, emergency dental services operate, according to the NFZ, from 19:00 to 7:00 the next morning on weekdays and around the clock at weekends and on public holidays. The Podlaskie region has 1 such site, in Białystok. The article on night-time and weekend dental care gives its address, telephone number and opening hours.

Swelling of the face or neck that makes breathing, speaking or swallowing difficult requires help at a hospital emergency department (SOR) or by calling the emergency number 112, rather than a dental appointment.

Which documents should you bring to an NFZ dentist?

An identity document is usually enough for an NFZ dental appointment, as the practice checks your entitlement in the NFZ system using your PESEL identification number (art. 50 of the Act). If the system does not confirm your insurance, you can show another document, such as an employer’s certificate, or submit a written declaration of entitlement to care.

  • During pregnancy: your maternity record, which establishes entitlement to additional dental services.
  • During the postnatal period: according to the Podlaskie NFZ branch, an abridged copy of your child’s birth certificate.
  • For a child: a document confirming age, as additional services depend on it (art. 31 ust. 4 of the Act).
  • For a person with a disability: an official disability certificate (orzeczenie o niepełnosprawności) for services that depend on the certified degree, such as treatment under general anaesthesia.
  • For every patient: a list of medicines you take and previous dental X-rays, if you have them.
