Patient pathways

Four situations in which treatment under general anaesthesia is the right route. Each pathway describes how the treatment ran, step by step.

A child who is not able to cooperate

From the consultation with the parents to waking under a nurse's care.

Qualification

A combined dental and anaesthesiology consultation: panoramic X-ray on site, parent history, treatment review.

Consultation

The anaesthesiologist covers eating and drinking before the anaesthetic, medication, and how waking goes.

Visit

Parent present as the child sleeps. All treatment in one visit. Nurse at waking, phone afterwards.

A patient with a disability

Scope agreed with the carer, NFZ funding checked against the certificate.

Qualification

A consultation with the carer: scope under one anaesthetic, NFZ funding checked against the certificate.

Consultation

Coexisting conditions, regular medication, current laboratory results, and the plan for both teams.

Visit

Restorative treatment and hygiene under one anaesthetic. Post operative care with a direct number.

An allergy to local anaesthetic

A joint dentist and anaesthesiologist decision to work without local anaesthetic.

Qualification

Allergy documentation in the history. A joint decision for general rather than local anaesthesia.

Consultation

A review of results and medication, the anaesthetic explained, and how vital signs are monitored.

Visit

The procedure without local anaesthetic. Vital signs monitored continuously, from induction to full recovery.

An inflammation too acute for local anaesthetic

Expedited qualification and treatment of the cause of the inflammation.

Qualification

A visit in pain the same week: panoramic X-ray, examination, decision for general anaesthesia.

Consultation

Anaesthesiology qualification on an expedited route: history, current medication, laboratory results.

Visit

Treatment of the cause under general anaesthesia. Written instructions and a direct care number.

Who it is for and who pays

The reason for treatment and the funding are two separate things. Funding depends on age and certificate, not on the reason.

Funding

Treatment under general anaesthesia is funded by the NFZ for patients up to the age of 16 who hold a disability certificate, over 16 with a moderate or severe degree certificate, and since 1 January 2026 also for children and young people under 18 in specific medical situations. Other patients can be treated privately.
