What makes up the price of dental treatment under general anaesthesia?
The price of dental treatment under general anaesthesia has four parts: the anaesthesiology qualification, the length of the general anaesthetic, supervision after the procedure, and the dental procedures carried out during sleep. The first three cover the work of the anaesthesiology team; the fourth is ordinary dental treatment, priced according to the items in the relevant categories of the price list.
That is why the question of how much general anaesthesia costs has two answers. The cost of the anaesthetic itself can be estimated fairly precisely, because it depends mainly on time. The cost of the whole treatment depends on how many teeth need treating and by which methods, and that only becomes clear after an examination and an X-ray.
- Anaesthesiology consultations: a qualifying visit and a review of the test results, before a date is set.
- Length of the general anaesthetic: charged in the clinic’s price list separately for the first hour and for each further hour.
- Post-operative supervision: a separate item in the price list, charged per hour and added to every treatment under general anaesthesia.
- Dental procedures: fillings, root canal treatment, extractions or professional cleaning, each priced separately.
How much does an hour of general anaesthesia at the dentist cost?
In the price list of the DentalBlue clinic in Białystok, the item “Pierwsza godzina narkozy” (the first hour of anaesthesia) costs 1 500 zł and “Każda kolejna godzina narkozy” (each further hour of anaesthesia) 500 zł. On top of this comes the “Pakiet dwóch konsultacji anestezjologicznych (1 wizyta oraz analiza badań)” (a package of two anaesthesiology consultations: one visit and the review of test results) at 400 zł and “Nadzór pozabiegowy /1h” (post-operative supervision, per hour) at 600 zł, which is charged for every treatment under general anaesthesia.
The anaesthesia items do not depend on age: in the price list, children and adults pay the same amounts for the consultations, the hours of anaesthesia and supervision. The final scope and cost are set at the qualifying consultation, and the prices in the clinic’s price list may change.
| Price list item | Price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Pakiet dwóch konsultacji anestezjologicznych (1 wizyta oraz analiza badań) | 400 zł | Qualification before a date is set |
| Pierwsza godzina narkozy | 1 500 zł | The first hour of general anaesthesia |
| Każda kolejna godzina narkozy | 500 zł | Each subsequent hour of anaesthesia |
| Nadzór pozabiegowy /1h | 600 zł | A separate item, charged per hour |
What determines how long general anaesthesia at the dentist lasts?
The length of a general anaesthetic depends above all on the scope of treatment agreed at qualification: the number of teeth, the type of procedures and whether professional cleaning or extractions are also done during the same sleep. In a study of 595 children treated under general anaesthesia as day cases, the procedure itself lasted on average 64.7 minutes, with a standard deviation of about 28 minutes (Ibrahim et al., 2022).
This average shows the typical order of magnitude, not a norm. A few fillings in one child and treatment of almost all the teeth in another can differ considerably in time, which is why the plan from qualification states the expected length of sleep and, with it, an estimated cost of the anaesthetic.
Planning all the treatment within one anaesthetic also has a medical rationale. In a 2016 communication, the US FDA drew attention to repeated or lengthy anaesthetics, lasting more than 3 hours, in children under 3. One well-planned anaesthetic is therefore usually a better solution than several short ones.
How much does dental treatment under general anaesthesia cost for a child: a worked example
The table below is purely an illustration built from items in the clinic’s published price list, not a quote for any patient. It assumes a hypothetical plan: 2 hours of anaesthesia, four composite fillings in milk teeth, one root canal treatment of a milk tooth and the removal of two milk teeth whose roots have not resorbed.
In this example, qualification, anaesthesia and post-operative supervision account for 3 000 zł of the 5 000 zł, and the rest goes on dental treatment. For another child the proportions will be different, because more procedures lengthen the sleep and increase the dental share. The illustration does not include imaging or the laboratory tests the anaesthesiologist may ask for.
| Price list item (illustration) | Quantity | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Pakiet dwóch konsultacji anestezjologicznych | 1 | 400 zł |
| Pierwsza godzina narkozy | 1 | 1 500 zł |
| Każda kolejna godzina narkozy | 1 | 500 zł |
| Nadzór pozabiegowy /1h (post-operative supervision, per hour) | 1 | 600 zł |
| Wypełnienie kompozyt ząb mleczny (composite filling in a milk tooth, 270 zł) | 4 | 1 080 zł |
| Leczenie kanałowe zęba mlecznego (root canal treatment of a milk tooth, 320 zł) | 1 | 320 zł |
| Usunięcie zęba mlecznego niezresorbowanego (extraction of an unresorbed milk tooth, 300 zł) | 2 | 600 zł |
| Total | all of the above | 5 000 zł |
How much does tooth extraction under general anaesthesia cost for an adult?
Tooth extraction under general anaesthesia for an adult costs the sum of the anaesthesia items and the price of the extraction itself, because the price list has no separate anaesthesia rates for adults. The dental part is priced according to the items for permanent teeth: in the clinic’s price list, “Ekstrakcja prosta zęba stałego wielokorzeniowego” (simple extraction of a multi-rooted permanent tooth) costs 500 zł, “Ekstrakcja zęba z dłutowaniem” (extraction with bone removal) 550 zł and “Operacyjne usunięcie zęba całkowicie zatrzymanego” (surgical removal of a fully impacted tooth) 1 000 zł.
With a single procedure it is clear that the cost of the anaesthetic outweighs the rest: the consultations and the first hour of anaesthesia together come to 1 900 zł, more than most extractions. This is one of the reasons why general anaesthesia for a single tooth is chosen only when there are medical indications for it, not for convenience.
When an adult qualifies for treatment under general anaesthesia and what the preparation involves are described in a separate article on dental treatment under general anaesthesia for adults.
When does the NFZ cover general anaesthesia at the dentist?
The NFZ funds dental treatment under general anaesthesia only for the groups listed in § 4 of the Minister of Health’s regulation on guaranteed dental treatment services (consolidated text, Dz.U. 2025 item 615). Under an NFZ contract, such a patient pays neither for the anaesthetic nor for the procedures in the basket of guaranteed services. Legal position as of 12 October 2026.
Since 1 January 2026 the circle of those entitled has included, besides people with a disability, five groups of children and young people up to the age of 18. In brief, the criteria are as follows:
- Children up to 16 with a disability certificate (orzeczenie o niepełnosprawności) and people aged 16 and over with a moderate or severe degree of disability, where there are medical indications.
- People up to 18 who are allergic to the drugs used for local anaesthesia.
- People up to 18 with a general illness in which anxiety or a tooth infection may harm their health, with the opinion of a specialist doctor.
- Children under 3 who do not cooperate despite adaptation visits and sedation, with at least 8 cavities, or root canal treatment or extraction of at least 4 teeth, a surgical procedure or an injury.
- People up to 18 who, in the judgement of a specialist in oral surgery or paediatric dentistry, cannot be treated safely even with sedation, where root canal treatment or extraction of 4 teeth in total, or a surgical procedure, is needed.
- People up to 18 who need immediate treatment of an acute odontogenic infection of the face and jaws, or a surgical procedure.
What does the NFZ not cover, even under general anaesthesia?
General anaesthesia on the NFZ does not extend the list of procedures: the same basket applies as for ordinary NFZ treatment. Crowns, implants and root canal treatment of premolars and molars in adults are not included in it, so they are not funded during general anaesthesia either.
An adult without a certificate of moderate or severe disability, including one with a severe fear of the dentist, does not meet the criteria and pays privately for treatment under general anaesthesia. The detailed criteria, the documents required and waiting times in the Podlaskie province are described in the article on dental treatment under general anaesthesia on the NFZ.
What should you check in a quote for treatment under general anaesthesia?
A quote for treatment under general anaesthesia should show each part of the cost separately, so that it is clear what you are paying for. Polish regulations require an anaesthesiologist to anaesthetise only one patient at a time, with an anaesthesia nurse, including outside an operating theatre (Ministry of Health regulation on the organisational standard of care in anaesthesiology, consolidated text Dz.U. 2026 item 228). Before agreeing to a plan, it is worth asking a few questions:
- Does the quote include the anaesthesiology qualification and the review of test results?
- How is the anaesthesia time charged, and how long does the plan expect it to be?
- How many hours of post-operative supervision does the plan include?
- Which dental procedures are planned, and how much does each one cost?
- What happens to the plan and the cost if, during the procedure, a tooth turns out to need different treatment?
How a quote for treatment under general anaesthesia works at DentalBlue
At DentalBlue, every treatment under general anaesthesia starts with a combined dental and anaesthesiology consultation: a panoramic X-ray, a full medical history, current medicines and laboratory test results. The date of the procedure is set only after it, and the patient receives a written treatment plan with prices. At the same qualification, entitlement to NFZ funding is confirmed on the basis of documents. The anaesthesiology team works in the clinic’s building: two anaesthesiologists and four anaesthesia nurses. For questions about preparation and aftercare you can call Monika Gosiewska (pre- and post-operative care, 606 983 347) and Anita Alińska (patient contact, 539 231 949) directly.
Frequently asked questions
How much does removing one tooth under general anaesthesia cost?
Based on the clinic’s price list, an example total is the consultation package (400 zł), the first hour of anaesthesia (1 500 zł), post-operative supervision (600 zł) and the extraction itself, for instance a simple extraction of a single-rooted tooth at 350 zł, giving 2 850 zł in total. A surgical procedure, several teeth or a longer sleep increase the amount. The scope and cost are set at qualification.
Does the NFZ contribute to private general anaesthesia at the dentist?
No. NFZ funding applies to treatment provided under an NFZ contract for patients who meet the criteria of § 4 of the regulation. Treatment carried out privately is paid for in full by the patient, according to the facility’s price list.
Is general anaesthesia worth it for treating one tooth?
General anaesthesia is decided by medical indications, not by the bill. For a single tooth the cost of the anaesthetic usually exceeds the cost of the procedure, and general anaesthesia itself requires qualification and preparation. If treatment under local anaesthesia is possible, it is the first choice.
Does inhalation sedation cost less than general anaesthesia?
In the clinic’s price list, the item “Podtlenek azotu” (nitrous oxide) costs 170 zł and “Maseczka do sedacji” (sedation mask) 50 zł. It is, however, a different method: the patient stays conscious, and sedation does not replace general anaesthesia where there are indications for it. The choice depends on the patient’s health and the scope of treatment.
How long does general anaesthesia last when all the teeth are treated?
There is no single figure, because the time depends on the number and type of procedures. In a study of children treated under general anaesthesia the procedure lasted on average about an hour, but extensive treatment can take longer. The expected time, and with it the cost, is given in the plan from qualification.
