What to discuss with a dentist who provides prosthetic treatment
You do not need to know the name of the restoration. Simply explain what you cannot do comfortably: chew food, speak without your denture moving or smile without covering a gap. This is a more useful starting point than asking for a particular crown you have chosen from a photograph.
The Polish word ‘protetyk’ is often used loosely. If you are looking for a dentist with a recognised specialist qualification in prosthodontics, check their qualifications in the Polish Supreme Medical Chamber's register (NIL). The name of a service online does not confirm that qualification.
What to bring to a prosthetic consultation
An old denture is useful even if you no longer wear it. Show where it rubs, when it becomes unstable and which repairs have already been made. Do not adjust or grind it yourself before the appointment; show the dentist the problem instead.
- A list of medicines and information about long-term conditions.
- Any images, scan reports and previous treatment plan you have.
- Dentures and splints you use, and details of repairs.
- Your questions about eating, speech, appearance and daily cleaning.
What should happen before choosing a bridge or denture
The plan concerns more than the gap itself. The teeth that would support the restoration and the condition of the tissues supporting them also matter. Advanced gum disease may require several stages of treatment before the final restoration can be made.
The dentist decides which imaging examinations are appropriate in your situation. Having a CT scan does not automatically mean it contains all the information needed to plan treatment.
How to compare treatment proposals
Compare options for the same clinical situation and the same scope of work. The price of one crown does not describe the cost of restoring several teeth, and the cost of a denture may not include dental treatment needed beforehand.
| Question | Why ask |
|---|---|
| Which teeth can be kept? | To understand the basis of the plan, rather than just the product name. |
| What are the reasonable alternatives? | To understand the limitations of fixed and removable options. |
| What will be temporary? | To plan for eating and appearance between treatment stages. |
| How will I clean it? | To choose an option you can maintain day to day. |
The estimate: ask about the scope, as well as the total
Make a note of whether the estimate includes preparatory treatment, a temporary restoration, the final restoration and follow-up visits. If a decision depends on an additional examination, ask what could change the cost. Not every part of treatment can be responsibly priced over the telephone.
DentalBlue's published price list includes crowns, bridges priced according to the scope of work and various dentures. The final choice should follow an examination; an item appearing in the price list does not mean the procedure is suitable for you.
A consultation at DentalBlue in Białystok
The clinic is at Kazimierza Pułaskiego 35. The price list for the ‘Pain-free visit’ lists a consultation, examination, panoramic X-ray and written plan. The dentist decides whether each examination is appropriate.
When booking, explain that you would like a prosthetic consultation and describe your main concern. Reception can arrange an appointment; it cannot replace an assessment of whether a tooth needs treatment, removal or restoration.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know which denture I want?
No. Describe your needs and difficulties, then ask about the possible options and their limitations during the consultation.
Can the full price be agreed over the telephone?
Published price-list items can be discussed over the telephone. An examination is needed to establish your individual treatment scope and the total cost.
Is it worth bringing an old denture?
Yes, even if it does not fit or you no longer wear it. It helps explain your previous experiences and needs.
Is a dentist providing prosthetic treatment the same as a dental technician?
No. A dentist makes medical decisions and provides treatment; a dental laboratory makes the prosthetic restoration on the dentist's instructions.
